the last two years
featuring original paintings - over 150 works
wednesday, april 27th, 2016 - 7PM-12AM
Artist statement on the presented body of work:
This ongoing body of work was generated while grieving the death of my mother in 2012. Experiencing myriad emotional and psychological states and at times paralysis, I assigned
myself the task of painting faces to mirror the complexity of grief and, frankly, continue working. Initially I intended to stop at 100 and call it The Century but as I surpassed that number I realized I wasn’t done so it continues to multiply as The Last Two Years.
Bio:
Shelton Walsmith is a mixed media artist working in Brooklyn, New York. His work has been published by The Paris Review, Knopf, Vintage, Rizzoli Books, Paris Vogue, Denver Quarterly, Shots Magazine, Harper Collins, The New York Times and others. He has exhibited in New York, San Francisco, Prague and Austin. His most recent one man show is at Queens College Arts Center winter 2015.
Artist statement:
"A body of work should not be a cadaver evidencing life 'that was' but rather the flashpoint for life which re-begins on each renewed encounter."

artist statement:
My artwork is a search for harmony within duality. Recently, I have been experimenting with the idea of boundaries, specifically with the state of merging or separating that is found when one voice ends and another begins. In the space where two ideas meet, miscommunication abounds, and there exists a strange disconnect of one’s certainty. Some of the concepts that I have been attempting to depict with my work are the boundaries found between individuals and cultures, the fragile balance between man and nature, and the equilibrium of life and death.
With this act of balancing parallel factions, I contemplate the identity and existence of one element in comparison to the other. Like a weighing scale, I have come to imply that one would need the other in order to accomplish a sense of normalcy; and thus, the equalization of weights becomes the end goal — a peaceful plateau of homeostasis.
I am interested in illustrating the midpoint where one and the other meet. It is here, in this space where worlds can form, collide, and secede, that there emerges an ambiguous state grounded between both fantasy and reality. This hazy limbo creates a void between the individual and the other — a space filled with infinite possibilities including profound beauty and truth, as well as terrifying realizations and doubts. I found that this occurs most frequently with feelings of missed opportunities, which progress into bouts of guilt and nostalgia.
For me, silence came to exist as a character within my works, which best establishes this sense of limitlessness and longing. I want others to take a moment and revel in this silence and explore both the destructive and empowering influence of things unspoken. For me, there is a curious attraction that pulls me to explore the awkwardness of silence and search for the beauty in the discomfort that may exist within moments of the unknown and the unfamiliar.

earth day - april 22, 2012

The Collaborative Outreach program of sevenminusseven is proud to announce "Striving for a Sustainable VI"; our upcoming Earth Day celebration and fundraiser on Sunday April 22, 2012.
At our warehouse gallery in Sub Base, St. Thomas.
We will be hosting speakers, demonstrators and vendors from our community who wish to share with us their knowledge on sustainable living here in the Virgin Islands. Some talks and presentations will include: alternative energy sources, making natural toothpaste, urban gardening and composting, "eating locally", eco jewelry. We are also hoping to have talks and demos on yoga and meditation, eco friendly cleaning products, solar cooking and reducing waste. Some of the activities will include: DIY reusable shopping bags, a collaborative on site urban garden project, free cycle/market place and children's story hour. There will be healthy food and drinks for sale, a raffle with prizes, a student art show and contest.
Our vision for this event is to celebrate Earth Day by offering resources for our community so we, as a whole, can begin to live a much more eco friendly and sustainable lifestyle in the Virgin Islands. Our island community is surrounded by a very sensitive reef system that has long felt the pressure of pollution, climate change and over fishing. Our economy relies heavily on imports as our main source of food. We recognize that much can be done in our individual households to help ease these pressures off of the community as a whole and our environment.
Along with raising awareness, we hope to raise funds for our Outreach Program. Our Outreach Program has been facilitating exciting and engaging art workshops and projects with youth and adults in our community for 4 years strong. As a nonprofit organization, we strive to be a vanguard for creativity and expression as well as an example of responsible waste management, safe art practices and recycling. The fees for a vendors table is $25.00, please come to sell your locally made or eco friendly products. The fee for the flea market is $10.00 to set up a table for your second hand belongings for sale. No fee for presenters or for bringing items for the free cycle (items available for free or trade). Please make sure items for the flea market and free cycle are clean and in fairly good condition and in working condition.
We look forward to seeing you there!
